Low-cost airline to offer transatlantic flights from Northern Ireland

Original Rte Source HERE   A new low-cost airline is set to offer transatlantic flights from Northern Ireland.   The announcement by Fly Atlantic has been described as a "game changer", filling the gap in the market of no direct flights currently operating between Belfast to North America.   Fly Atlantic is planning to start operating flights to Europe as well as North America from summer 2024.Once fully operational, the airline said it intends to operate to 35 destinations from Belfast, and will create 21,000 new jobs by 2030.   That figure is to include 1,000 jobs created within the airline and up to 21,000 in tourism and support sectors.   Flights will start to go on sale from the beginning of 2024.   The airline said it will initially operate six aircraft at Belfast International Airport, and plans to grow to a fleet of 18 by 2028.   It is in discussion with both Boeing and Airbus over aircraft, with the choice being between the Boeing MAX and the Airbus A321.   Fly Atlantic's chief executive Andrew Pyne said they chose Belfast over strong competition across the UK.   "Our vision is of Belfast as a strong aviation hub linking Europe and North America," he said.   "The lack of direct transatlantic air services has clearly been an impediment to Northern Ireland's economic and tourism development, which we now intend to remove.   "The project can be a gamechanger.   "We will be offering affordable fares with brand new aircraft. We already have offices at the airport and will now be building out the infrastructure to support the airline's launch. We start recruiting for the team early in 2023.   "We looked at many options throughout the UK and Ireland. Belfast International and Vinci stood out in terms of the facilities that they offered us and by their enthusiasm for and commitment to making this project a reality.   "Northern Ireland has a proud aviation and engineering history, and we are delighted to be able to build on this tradition as we develop the airline and its support functions."   Mr Pyne also acknowledged support received from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, adding it had been "right behind the project from the start".   Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Stephen Ross described the airline's announcement as "fantastic news not only for the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough but for Northern Ireland as a whole".   "This is a key moment for Northern Ireland and is the most significant local aviation announcement in recent history," he said.   "Belfast International Airport is the ideal hub for Fly Atlantic to base its operations due to its location, drive, and ability to offer unparalleled experience and routes for passengers."   Graham Keddie, Managing Director of Belfast International Airport, also welcomed the announcement.   "We look forward to them bringing this project to fruition as it would have very real economic benefits for Northern Ireland's economy and would further enhance our international connectivity," he said.

The public are able to choose their favourites across 20 categories including Best Restaurant, Best Casual Dining, Best Chef, Best Seafood Experience, Best World Cuisine and more.   Nominations can be made via www.irishtimes.com/irishrestaurantawards from 12 noon, Wednesday 11th of January until 12 noon, Wednesday 25th of January The Irish Restaurant Awards showcase the true talent that Ireland’s hospitality industry has to offer by acknowledging outstanding performers in the sector. Growing steadily from its humble beginnings back in 2009, the awards are now a five-month long process consisting of online public nominations, judging panels, mystery guest inspections and regional and national events.   Adrian Cummins, Chief Executive of the Restaurants Association commented; “The aim of the Irish Restaurant Awards is to honour the hard working people of the hospitality industry from cocktail makers, sommeliers and waiters to restaurant managers and local food champions. The restaurant industry is the biggest employer within the Irish tourism sector, employing over 74,000 people and these awards are a celebration and acknowledgement of the hard work put in by restaurateurs year round.”   This year, there are 20 categories in which the general public can nominate. These categories are made up of 15 Main award categories, including an exciting new category ‘Pub of the Year’, and five National award categories.   Main categories are as follows: • Best Restaurant • Best Chef • Best Restaurant Manager • Best Hotel Restaurant • Best Casual Dining • Best Gastro Pub • Best Newcomer • Best Customer Service • Best Wine Experience • Best Emerging Irish Cuisine • Best World Cuisine • Best Cafe • Best Kids Size Me • Local Food Hero • Pub of the Year (NEW!)   National Categories • Best Cocktail Experience • Best Private Dining & Club Restaurant • Best Cookery School • Best Seafood Experience • Best Digital Marketing   In the first stage of the judging process, online nominations are given a weighting of 30%, while the remaining 70% is made up from a regional judging panel assessment. Both of these results are combined and reviewed by an independent auditor (BDO) to give an overall county winner per category. These winners will be announced at a number of regional events held in March.   Each county winner then goes forward to the Regional and All-Ireland stage whereby they will then each receive a mystery guest inspection. They will be assessed on their menu, customer service, and the overall dining experience from the moment the booking is made until the customer receives the bill. Full details on the judging process can be found on the official Awards website www.irishrestaurantawards.com.   National Categories will not receive a mystery guest inspection. They will be judged by the National Academy with the exception of Best Cocktail Experience which will be judged by the Bartenders Association of Ireland at a live competition. The All-Ireland final of the Irish Restaurant Awards 2017 takes place on Monday 8th of May 2017 in the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road.
